...but wait, it has to fulfill the following stipulations (required by the, shall we say, somewhat conservative-minded recipient):
- must be a classic chocolate cake recipe, i.e. not a soufflé or flourless cake or Sachertorte or some other "special" cake. "Fancy European" cakes are frowned upon. We want something American here.
- must go with white vanilla frosting (buttercream-meringue in all likelihood; BTW feel free to toss in a recipe for that too if you can)
- must not contain coffee, nuts or too-adventurous ingredients (wasabi, lavender, ...)
- must taste chocolatey.
Calories no object.
I know, there's a gazillion recipes out there, and that's why I need your help. I'm looking for something that *you, personally* swear by. I made the cake from Gourmet's January 2004 cover last time; it was good and I can go back to that recipe, but was hoping for something even better this time around.
I own the following potentially relevant cookbooks, if you want me to look up recipes:
Beranbaum - The Cake Bible
Nigella - Domestic Goddess
Joy of Cooking early 90s edition, mid-80s edition
Flo Braker - The Simple Art of Perfect Baking
The Metropolitan Bakery Cookbook (has a mayonnaise chocolate cake - anyone tried it?)
Lebowitz - Room for Dessert
