Chirashi at Shogun in Salinas

Melanie Wong | Dec 27, 201009:38 AM

Before the year ends, I wanted to give a shout out to Shogun in Old Town Salinas, near the Steinbeck Center. After a break of three or four years, I was back there on April 27 for lunch with my mother.

Mom had a combination bento lunch special. More details I cannot recall at this point, other than that she had some leftovers to take home and was satisfied with her meal.

For me, the chirashi packed into a bigger box and about twice the fish I’m accustomed to seeing in San Francisco. This was quite the good deal at $18.95, accompanied by a complimentary bowl of miso soup to start. No odds and end of shopworn fish here. Thick slabs of good quality fish, takuwan, tamago and lacy shreds of daikon over well-made sushi rice.

I’d been to Sushi Heaven in Carmel the week before, and I felt the quality of the fish at Shogun beat it handily.
