Chinese Tamales in Sunset Park

I noticed today Mei Ling's "Good Taste House Bakery" on 4th Ave at 59th Street now sells joong, or "Chinese tamales" -- sticky rice wrapped up in leaves, stuffed with pork, peanuts and egg yolk.

The staff seemed really excited about them!

I remembered a similar treat from Chinatown in Boston, where they were big honkin' things that included Chinese sausage. Didn't really care for the Boston version. The flavors were too strong for me.

But Mei Ling's are smaller than a fist, with a less overpowering flavor. The sticky rice is naturally somewhat sweet, but not sweetENED as in Boston; the pork is simple, the egg is simple. These joong register as "breakfast joong" according to my anglo palate. THEY GO GREAT WITH MEI LING'S ETERNALLY BEGUILING COFFEE.
