chinese five spice

I've been using Penzey's Five Spice and have found it overwhelmingly cinnamon-y. Even when I reduce the amount called for, as in a hoisin and five spice marinated roast pork that I made on Friday, the cinnamon still dominates unpleasantly. Is this a characteristic of Penzey's five spice or of five spice in general?
