Chinese sauce ingredients

A lot of Chinese restaurants here offer the "make your own dish" option where you choose 4 veg to steam and a sauce to have on the side. The sauce choices are usually brown sauce, white sauce, garlic sauce and black bean sauce.

What are these sauces made of? I'd like to know in case some aren't vegetarian and because I could save some money by making this stuff at home...
