I have many questions about Chinese Banquets and the type of food served. I hope there are folks out there who can both indulge me a bit and offer some enlightenment.
What is a Chinese Banquet? Under what circumstances can one be given? Is it something reserved only for monumental occassions - like a wedding? Or even a bar mitvah!?
Or can it celebrate an anninversary, a business deal, or just a be a special social gethering?
Are there dishes that MUST be included? Are substitutions possible?
I have heard much about 'face' at a banquet... about saving face, retaining honor... does this still apply? My own brief research leads me to believe that this depends on the occassion, the organizer's station in life, and the expectations of the people receiving the banquet. But maybe I'm wrong....
