Chinatown Walking Tour

Ciaohound | Jun 24, 200208:55 AM

We're walking, talking, eating, and shopping San Francisco's Chinatown on Saturday, July 13, 2002 with approximately 15-20 interested Chowhounds. Our tour guide is Chinese, grew up in San Francisco, and is an expert on the ins and outs of shopping in Chinatown. In addition, he is very skillfull at locating the highest quality for the lowest possible prices, something we can all appreciate and learn from.

We will all meet for an authentic Chinese Breakfast of Jook (Congee) at 8:30 A.M. to gather out wits about us and review the tour schedule.

Within approximately 3 square blocks we will visit 2 bakeries, 1 fortune cookie company, 2 sausage makers, a pearl drink shop, 3 stores specializing in duck/pork/chicken, 1 game bird shop, 2 herbs/Ginseng stores, 2 seafood and poultry markets, 2 fresh meat markets (Chinese butchers), and 2 take-out Dim Sum restaurants. Your purchases can be held for later pick-up or once the tour is finished you can return to the stores and make your purchases on your way home.

We will have a family-style lunch at 12:00 noon.

It is possible that our shopping will be done by noon and people can go back to the stores and pick up their purchases, continue shopping, leave for home, or whatever works for each individual. It is also possible that we will have more shopping and walking to do after lunch, we're going to be pretty flexible since there is so much ground, literally and figuratively, to cover.

There are lots of 2 hour meters on the street, and the Portsmouth Garage under $10 for the whole day) is available for parking.

The cost of the event will be your share of the breakfast and lunch bill (very reasonable, approximately $15 or so)and a $10 per person Goodwill
donation to Chowhound. If it was not for the Chowhound site, we would not have a platform to meet. The organizers will be making this donation as well
because we need to keep the lights on.
