China Garden, Irvine

AndrewS | Feb 14, 200501:11 AM

Just got back from China Garden in Irvine, and I had to express my thanks to those who recommended it.

The three of us (mOm, fiance, and me) went for three dishes:

1). Live king crab two ways- this was spectacular. First they bring out the live crab for your viewing pleasure- a body the size of a small plate, hued a deep brown red that turned crimson with cooking. I'm not normally a fan of cold shellfish, but the fresh crab legs on ice were incredible. My mother (a hound of many years and continents experience) declared it better than any lobster she'd ever had. I tend to agree. The joints done house style (deep-fried with scallions and garlic) were also quite tasty, but the cold pure crab with a light sauce that brought out its sweetness was unmatchable.

2). Filet mignon- 'french style'- a smokey sweet beef dish, extremely tasty, but I think I'd try something more adventurous next time.

3). Baby bok choy sauteed with garlic- these were gorgeous, perfect inch and a half long bok choy with tips the color of a fine moss jade going into white jade stalks. Wonderfully tasty, this looked like a bowlful of little gems.

The manager was extremly helpful (it definitely helped that he knew we were there for the crab)- coming over making recommendations and explaining things, and, miraculously, restraining us from over-ordering.

All in all a great experience. Many thanks again.
