Chilayo on Chestnut in SF

Mari | Sep 16, 200909:45 PM

I walked by today with the intention of going to Pluto's but there was a live mariachi band for Mexican independence day at Chilayo that we could hear a block away so we stopped by. I was pleasantly surprised. Chilayo replaced Andale and I think it has the same set up. Nevertheless, the food was quite good. We tried the shrimp fajitas with rice and beans, the shrimp ceviche, a carnitas taco, a Coke and an agua de jamaica. They don't add sugar to their jamaica so at $3 for the drink it's not worth it - maybe they are catering to the Marina health-conscious crowd but I can't imagine that many people new to jamaica (hibiscus) would enjoy it without sugar.

The carnitas taco had a mound of carnitas and they were excellent (should be at $5 for a taco w/ guacamole and chips). The tortilla was freshly fried - delicious. These are among the best carnitas I've had in a while. The shrimp ceviche was nice too with bits of mango and cucumber. The salsa bar is nicely presented and the salsas were very well made with about 8 different salsas. They even had a pepita (pumpkin seed) sauce. My husband thought the portions were a tad skimpy for the price, but I guess one's paying for real estate on Chestnut too. It's definitely worth another try.

They also have beer (Chimay and other brands) and wine. Any other reports?
