Chiko on Barracks Row - Report

Steve | Feb 3, 201808:50 PM

I asked fellow Chowhound Marty L what he recommends at the wildly popular Chiko, and he said 'everything.' As much as I trust him, I have to admit I was a bit skeptical. I was also a bit wary about eating anything hipster or precious. After all, I already have access to cheap and plentiful Chinese and Korean (hence the name of the place) in the 'burbs.'

They open at 5pm, and I arrived at 6:15pm. It's a tiny place, and there was already a line, inside, of about eight people. They offer appetizers at about $8-11, and entrees at about $15-18. You order, they tell you where to sit, and then they bring you the food. They don't take your order until some seating opens up.

I ordered two appetizers, though they are of sufficient size that one could be a meal. I got the chilled acorn noodles and the 'shrimp and grits' (a shrimp porridge). I am happy to report there is nothing hipster about the food. Both were super delicious, spicy, but with a touch of sweetness to make it all go smoothly well together. With the chilled noodles, there was enough Asian pear to be delightful. This was an excellent bowl of varied favors and textures, and I could have stopped right there and left very satisfied. The shrimp and grits were also spicy, and the shrimp itself had a touch of sweetness.

I left thinking that Marty was right (as usual), it's most likely that you'll be happy with whatever you order. And although it doesn't seem like a place for lingering, that's not completley out of the question, especially if you order the banchan. Though at $3 per bowl, I can see where this could get pricey.

When I left at 7:15pm, there wasn't a line.
