Houston's has gotten a lot of positive reviews here despite being a chain. I went to the Pasadena branch (SE corner of Arroyo Pkwy and Del Mar, at the Del Mar Gold Line stop) and ordered a chicken burger. It was very good -- not as good as the chicken (or is it turkey?) burger at Mustard Seed Cafe, which is really in a class by itself, but clearly better than all of the other non-beef burgers that I have tried. Of course it better be for $14, since you can get two or three not-too-terrible chicken burgers with fries at McDonald's for that. But it is. It's the attention to detail. The most striking thing was the bun, which I believe was some kind of egg bread, very fresh and very flavorful. I was also struck by the salt and pepper. The salt was flaky and I took it to be some kind of sea salt. And each table had its own pepper grinders, set to produce coarse and aromatic hunks of pepper corn. The only difficulty I had with the burger was that it contained two small pieces of chicken rather than one large one, making it a bit of a challenge to keep the whole thing together as I was eating it. Overall though it was a positive experience of a place where everything just works.
