Hi all - incoming New Yorker here, spending the next year in Chicago at graduate school. I've combed the boards and have an enormous list of restaurants, from upscale to down and dirty, that I'm eager to try. But it's difficult to differentiate between the many locally sourced New American style restaurants, or the various mouthwatering Latino neighborhood staples, etc.
So, drawing inspiration from this thread - http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/443609 - I wanted to try a different spin: your top handful of can't miss, stand-out dishes. Hopefully this will shine a light on places that might have a singular dish (Kuma's Corner?) and also provide some recommendational equity between Alinea's extravagance and a transcendent taco. Deliciousness is truly the great equalizer.
Looking forward to this.
