I'll be visiting Chicago for the first time and will be posting on this board over the next few weeks (trip is in February). I've already chosen some places to eat, but need others from fellow chowhounds. Specifically, I could use suggestions for Polish food (especially good potato pancakes), sushi, a good burger, a good chocolate milkshake, and fish and chips.
On another note, I've been reading some guidebooks on Chicago and am struck by how many warnings there are about rough neighborhoods. This leaves me wondering: I live in NYC and know firsthand how people often see danger in areas that are relatively safe, and the last thing I want is to miss out on an interesting experience because the author of a guidebook overreacted. On the other hand, I don't want to put myself at risk. More specifically, I was thinking of going to the Checkerboard Lounge and Lee's Unleaded Blues. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance for the tips.
