Chez Panisse Cafe, Berkeley report w/ pics

hhc | Feb 16, 200808:53 PM

We ate at Chez Panisse Cafe (Upstairs). It's in the book "1,000 Places To See Before You Die" by Patricia Schultz so I can die happy!

I made Reservations on Jan. 16, 2008 to eat here Sat. Feb 16, 2008.

Don't even think of going here without reservations! A family w/ 3 ppl didn't have reservations & the hostess said they were fully booked, poor them. They don't open their front door until 11:30am so we had to sit outside where they have 3 benches to sit & wait. I should have just stood & waited because the couple before me took the table I wanted, the one by the window facing Shattuck Ave. I asked the hostess for a table by the window & she said they save those for tables of 3 ppl.

We had lots of time to study the menu, waitress answered our questions that we had. You get complimentary Still or Sparkling Tap Water. We got Sparkling. Free Acme levain bread w/ butter given, got seconds too.

We ordered too much:

Pizzetta w/ wild nettles & pecorino $13. Salty but good, pretty big portion. Didn't really need the main entree, since I was full from this.

Star Route Farm frisee & celery root salad w/ local halibut & caper vinaigrette $10 - good

Bolinas rockfish roasted in the wood oven w/ chickpeas, cardoons, rosemary & aioli $20 - good

Sonoma County duck ragu w/ peas & polenta $19. good

Pink Lady apple & huckleberry crisp w/ candied Meyer lemon ice cream $9.5. good, wish there was more crisp to it.

glass of Navarro grape juice $4.75. nice.

17% service charge added to bill.

Separate men/women bathrooms. Women has 2 stalls, 1 sink.
