Chez Mimi (review - longish)

Natalie in Los Angeles | Mar 2, 200410:57 AM

I had a very lovely lunch at Chez Mimi in Brentwood/Santa Monica this Saturday. A great place for 'ladies who lunch.' There was a bridal shower going on in the back dining room and several tables celebrating birthdays (one of them being ours.) They don't do a brunch but lunch suited us fine.

There were 4 of us and we sat on the patio, which is covered but still felt had the outdoor feel. There also seem to be about 3 or 4 small dining rooms, so all the rooms felt intimate and homey. We all started with the Onion Soup, which was delicious. Broth was very rich and deep, cheese perfectly gooey. We also shared the pate appetizer, which was amazing. Served with little toasts and cornichons. We all loved it and thought it was some of the best pate we had ever had.

My mussels were cooked in a cream, vermouth, onion stock and were very tender and moist. Not elastic at all, which I've sometimes encountered. There were too many to finish but I tried. They were served with a small plate of perfectly cooked frites. I appreciated the size of the plate...not a huge heaping American serving size.

Two of my friends had fish specials...One I believe was whitefish over couscous, the other was sole. They both thought they were perfectly prepared. Fourth friend only had a small Caesar salad since she wasn't that hungry and frankly with the soup and pate it really was plenty of food.

We had one of the best Tarte Tatins ever and some fresh sorbets. We also shared a nice and reasonably priced bottle of champagne. With tax and tip the bill came to $180. They did charge us for both desserts, but did do the candle in the tart thing and didn't sing, which wa nice.

I'd definitely go back again. Really nice atmosphere and I'm sure it would be very romantic at night. I felt as if I had been there before and asked on my way out. It used to be called Camile's (I think that's what she said) and I had definitely attended a baby shower there in the past.
