We were looking for the friendly Spanish restaurant near North York Centre; alas, it had been replaced by Bombay Bhel. We turned a few doors south and decided to give Chez Laurent a try.
The patio was occupied by patrons who looked at ease and obviously pleased by their experience.
For appeitizer, we had the carrot ginger soup and the caesar salad.
The caesar was just passable, but the soup was packed with flavour, and it just felt so down to earth. bf soaked the plate clean with the warm bread served to us.
I had the mussels for main and bf had the rainbow trout with side of penne. There was nothing spectacular about the food, but it was made with care and everything was just solid good Italian cooking. My mussels were super fresh, bathed in delicious marinara. The trout was poached perfectly in a dill/tomato concoction and the penne was cooked al dante and seasoned perfectly.
We had tea and shared a creme brule. The creme brule was so delicious without any fancy weird flavouring.
With a half litre of house white, the bill came to just $70. I don't think the food was spectacular, but it was reliable, honest, carefully prepared and did not skim on ingredients. We would go back.
