Chewy, dense, multi-grain bread?

Juniper | Nov 1, 2005 11:51 AM

I love stews and soups and this is the perfect season to enjoy such delights. And the best part about such meals is sopping up the remaining broth in my bowl with slices of chewy, dense, multi-grain bread.

I've tried Ace, Stone Mill, Fred's, Alchemy, My Market, Futures, and all the usual suspects. However, I can't seem to find a multi-grain bread that doesn't disintegrate upon contact with broth.* Perhaps I've missed something? Perhaps this doesn't exist? If it does indeed exist, where can I find this hitherto elusive staple of a fall/winter dining table (I would prefer if you could help me find somewhere downtown, as I don't own a car).

Much thanks in advance!

(*) The breads I have found disintegrate like Kleenex in water. Yuck!
