[Chennai, India] South Indian options at Express Avenue

Express Avenue used to be the largest and most popular mall in Chennai until Phoenix Market City came about last year. Express Avenue continues to be very popular with local Chennai-ites for its branded shops, multiplex and EA Garden, a bustling foodcourt filled with interesting dining options - though admittedly they are part of popular local chains.

One of my go-to spots in EA Garden is Dasa Dozza, which offers the typical South Indian staples like dosas, parotas, idlis, etc. Most of these are available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. What we had last night:

Rava Dosa

Very thin, crisp dosa with chopped onions, coriander leaves & chillis incorporated into the batter.

The coconut chutney they served here was superlative.

Pav Bhaji

This is my fave snack from Mumbai - a classic spiced curried vegetables in a light toasted bun meal. A very respectable version here.

Paneer Appam

I love appams and I simply love paneer - not sure if I had unrealistic expectations, but I found the rendition here pretty average. Not spongy soft in the centre, and the edges weren't lacy nor crispy.

Egg Appam

This option is an improvement. Goes well with chicken korma - if only I can find a really good one at the food court.

Be aware that the purchasing method at EA Garden food court can be a royal pain - you buy stored value cards which you *cannot* return or get a refund for the unused amount. So, make sure you don't over-estimate the amount you need when you buy the card.
