Chennai Dosa

JFores | Apr 28, 2008 06:41 AM

I made my way down to Croydon (South specifically) for the whole weekend and one of my meals down there was at Chennai Dosa. The three of us went there for dinner in what you could consider either West Croydon or Thornton Heath. Given the name, you'd expect that the dosas would be quite good. They are. The dosas are actually very crispy, the masala dosas stay crispy, and while dosas are not my overwhelming cup of tea, they're still very good. The rava dosa is a paper thin and crispy semolina creation with a sprinkling of onions and a heaping amount of masala potato mixture inside. This masala dosa is 3 quid and it comes with South Indian style dal and another side! I ordered the king fish special with rice. It was extremely good and was the best South Indian style food I've had in London by far. The flavors in the liquid were varied and delicious and the fish was very firm and nicely done, yet still easy to break apart and mix with rice in your hand. At 4 quid, the king fish was an astoundingly good deal. The portions (especially rice!!!) are enormous compared to Gram Bangla, a place which I love, but which annoys me with its skimpy rice portions. The bowl of rice that I was given for 1 pound (as opposed to 1.50 at Gram) contained enough fluffy white deliciousness to feed much of Bangladesh for a year or two. Overall, great restaurant that I need to get back to ASAP. I recommend anyone within reach go and try it; it's not an easy commute.
