Chenery St. Restaurant (long)

Food Dog Man | Oct 29, 2001 05:05 PM

I kinda drift in and out of this board about once every two weeks so I don't know if this place has been covered earlier, but I wanted to tell you that the other day the lioness and I were on the prowl and decided on the spur of the moment to try this new place on Chenery about a block from the Glen Park BART station, and it was great.

Not overloud. Two levels, with a big attractive open staircase between. Attractive decor. They kinda stared at us when we told them we didn't have a reservation, but there was plenty of room (around 6:30; it filled up by 8:00). An unusual food delivery system whereby the person who takes your order is not necessarily the person who brings the drinks, and a third person may bear the grub. Appetizers in the $6-$10 range, main courses $12-$20, so it's not a wallet-emptier.

I had the corn and salmon chowder (delish) and a great salad, very nice leaves of butter lettuce with pomegranate seeds, pistachios, mango, and maybe some other damn thing. (You know what I hate? When you're in one of those restaurants where the menu lists everything that's in the dish, and one of those things ya just can't stand, thereby ruining the restaurant's chances of the dish being ordered.) The lioness of course had to be fed meat, and she liked it a lot, a steak with what looked suspiciously like potato sticks but were probably supposed to be fancier than that and some beautifully done green beans. Portions were OK-sized, so we were full, though it helped that I ate half her steak and she had two Irish whiskeys. At any rate, we didn't need dessert.

We'll be back!
