There have been a lot of changes at Chelsea Market in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan. We did a spring foray on Sunday afternoon and it was bustling, busy as usual.
There is a basement level now where we were pleased to find an outpost for Saxelby Cheesemongers out of the Essex Street Market. Had to share one of their grilled cheese sandwiches on a small baguette. Yummy! Next to it was one of two Dickson's Farmstand Meat outposts where we sampled some of their fresh made 'jerky'. Grabbed a bag to share with family later. Their shop upstairs was crowded with customers craving sandwiches and artisanal hot dogs.
The Lobster Place Market was loaded. Always have fun watching intrepid patrons trying to manage their whole lobsters and all the trimmings in a small space. It is a comedic show, of sorts. Meanwhile, Miznon's was packed with diners sharing his signature whole roasted cauliflower. Looked good, but we kept moving.
Berlin Currywurst was certainly different. Don't have to wait for Oktoberfest to enjoy this one. Not too many places for 'currywurst' left anymore. The line at Los Tacos snaked out onto the main hall. Never did get the appeal myself. Oh, they are tasty, but small mouthfuls and fall apart easily. Don't understand the obsession.
And there it was, my personal search was over: Seed + Mill, the halva maker. Halva is a childhood favorite. Had to get some hunks to take home: mixed chocolate and vegan sesame.
Been to Chealsea Market lately? Please share your findings. www.chelseamarket.com
