Had dinner at Chef's Table on Friday night. It was a mixed experience. We arrived about 8:30 (they close at 9:00, as does everything in downtown W'ville) and were seated promptly. They have a HUGE wine list (literally a book about a half inch thick). I was excited to see a Mucadet from France on the list, so we ordered a bottle. About 10 minutes later, the waitress returns and says they don't have it. She proceeds to request that we go ahead and order (not just apps, but everything!). We do so, and after a few minutes perusal of the wine list again, I change directions totally and order a Primativo from Puglia. Off she goes to search for the wine. meanwhile, our appetizer arrives. It was delicious... risotto and crab balls that had been lightly fired, with a wonderful lemony aoli sauce. Really, really good. The waitress finally reappears without the wine...they're out of it also. I just order a couple of glasses of pinot noir. Its annoying to have this gigantic wine list if they can't keep things in stock. Our salads were also wonderful, but the main dish was just so-so. It was a pasta dish with swiss chard (I'm pretty sure they sunstituted spinach), pesto sauce, sun dried tomatoes, pine nuts and asparagus. It just didn't come together as a cohesive dish to me.
In summary, a great appetizer, rushed service, wine snafus and a so-so main course. I guess we should have gone to Sweet Onion, but we just weren't in the mood for anything on their menu.
