First of all, I'm pretty sure Sartori's BellaVitano is the same thing as Trader Joe's "Toscano" cheese. I love the wine-soaked one (BellaVitano is in merlot and TJ's is in syrah) in particular, but it's really the cheese itself, sweet, nutty, crunchy, and rich, that's so delightful.
What are some comparable cheeses? This is the research I've done:
- In 2012, Berkeley Bowl's cheese counter said that the BellaVitano was an asiago
- The official TJ's description is "flavor of an aged parmesan, texture of a cheddar"
- Nora Singley says it's like a 1-2 year aged gouda.
