I am a cheapskate and do not want to buy a restaurant's wine or their flights of wine

This is more of a hypothetical question. Hypothetically, you have a budget conscious couple on a date at a "destination" restaurant for the area. They love wine, but the flights are out of their budgets and whole bottles as well as glasses of wine can run up the bill. Her Aunt Betty gave them a moderate costing bottle of wine (not $2 Chuck!) for their anniversary. Though it is not a unique vintage or from a unique winery it is special to the couple (and is not on the wine list). They want to pay the corkage and enjoy their wine; however, popular wisdom on these boards seems to frown on this. The reason I ask is that years ago my budget was a lot more flexible, but now I save for those special occasions and take into consideration wine flights etc. at restaurants. I am lot more sensitive about being on a budget. What about the folks who see the wine as too extravagant? Would they get poor service? Have sommeliers refused to open someone's wine?

The restaurant is in a very pricey part of town yet doesn't have competition for miles. The menu is prix fixe. I know haters are gonna hate me on this one, but I am sure there are some people out there who have felt intimidated by wine pricing structures, but still want to have a night of enjoyment.
