This bright, outspoken crowd is able to discuss all sorts of issues with flair and intelligence. But Chowhound has a narrow purpose: sussing out how and where to eat really well. Most people come to this board to swap local chow tips. Expansive discussion/debate of off-topic issues disrupts our signal-to-noise ratio. We are a data trove, not a chat room for debating larger issues.
Discussion naturally tends to digress and expand though, and we accommodate this by offering dedicated message boards for larger issues. For matters of restaurant/food economics and politics, please use our Not About Food board. For more directly edible matters, please use our General Topics board.
When a thread expands to the point where it's no longer on topic (that is, it's no longer pragmatically applicable to eating well in Toronto), please start a new thread on one of those boards, to keep this board chowy and to enjoy the thoughts of a wider group of chowhounds on wider issues. You may post a "heads up" to this board to let onlookers know to make the leap.
Discussion of site policy belongs on our Site Talk board, so please address comments/questions there (again, so we can keep this board as chowcentric as possible).
