This is a reverse pairing request from an absolute wine newbie. The varietal tasting group I recently joined involves bringing a food that matches the wine or inspired by its region. I picked this one among a few alternatives that were suggested for the chenin blanc month. Now there is the tricky part, what should I take with it? This is an afternoon tasting, and I won't be able to cook that morning; so something reheatable, cold, or really easy to make is imperative.
One thing I came up with was a cold asparagus/pea soup; perhaps it might need something lemony? Lemon croutons? Or go the other way and make it cream based?
Shellfish is suggested, but depending on the size of the group, the cost might be prohibitive. Maybe a light mussel dish with coconut milk/lemongrass?
Or a lazy-ass cheese pairing maybe? It is always easy to put a hunk of cheese in my bag and just show up; and I live in Montreal so cheese is very accessible and available.
