Charlotte "joints"

A previous post asked about good restaurants near the Charlotte airport. The Ranch House was a good choice but one of the best -- Copal Grill, 5923 Wilkinson Blvd. -- was left out. (You may remember Copal's from an old Hootie & the Blowfish video.)

Here's a description:

"CEOs and concrete pourers rub elbows at the Copal Grill, where the chefs serve up the best in simple breakfasts and soul-food lunches and dinners. Vegetables here are prepared Southern style, slow-cooked with salt and fatback. Don't be turned off by the rudimentary interior -- this place wouldn't know a halogen bulb from a frittata, but its staying power is based on its longtime reputation for being everyman's place to eat. In a downtown area undergoing massive rejuvenation, the Copal is one of the few places left from Charlotte's former life. It's as Charlotte as Charlotte gets." -- Tracy Russ

I've been a customer of Copal's for over 40 years. A favorite is the chopped sirloin (which almost covers the plate), grilled onions, mashed potatoes, and cole slaw -- and a cold Bud.

Hint: get there early before they run out of cornbread!
