New In Charlotte and need dining help!

My wife and I just recently, ok 4 months ago, moved to Charlotte and we are struggling to find good places to eat. When we did finally find a good one it closed; Current's Coastal Cuisine, we hear it was sold and will be reopening as a different type of restaurant. We have dined at the Penguin a few times when we have had company in town and find it to be a good place to get diner food especially for lunch. We ate this weekend at Sugar Magnolia's in Blakeney and enjoyed the southern fare. We have eaten at Cantina 1511 and liked it until they changed the way they prepared the meat they use on the tacos al carbon. We really love mexican food and have had no luck in this arena at all. We tried Zappata's in Ballantyne and it's OK but not excellent by any stretch. We have a few good places here in our town of Waxhaw. the problem is we can't get a cocktail with our dinner in this quaint little town. We would really just appreciate some suggestions on some non chain, casual not overly expensive places in or around Charlotte where we can eat out and not feel like we wasted our money. Thanks in advance.
