Chardonnay or Barolo with risotto?

Butternut squash risotto with Parmesan and cream (it's all I've got in the fridge!)

I would normally open a white wine with this, but I have a hankering for barolo. Will the flavors completely clash? I would of course be drinking it on the side (even though I once saw Tyler Florence add an amarone to pumpkin risotto).
