Challah French Toast

When I lived in Chicago, I frequented a place called the Bagel because they knew how to make my favorite challah french toast - almost burnt. I love challah french toast almost burnt because the outside is crispy on account of heat/oil, but the inside remains soft. I've heard that B&H dairy in E. Village/LES is good. Can anyone verify this or offer alternatives? Brooklyn is option, too.
