I went to Chalio Birrieria (3580 E 1st St, 323 268 5349, 30 or 31 bus from downtown -- there's another branch on Atlantic just north of Whittier, near the Rapid bus and Lulu's Bakery). Classic Mexican restaurant decor with big booths, stuffed deer heads on the walls, and a Mexican jukebox. The menu is big but most people get the goat (with or without "nerve meat"). For $7 or $8 you get a moderate sized plate of spicy goat, some first-rate tortillas, onions, cilantro, limes, and some pretty good hot sauce. (No beans, rice, or chips, thankfully.) I also got a (fresh squeezed) orange juice. It was all very good, but the goat lacked a slight amount of goaty zap, and the orange juice wasn't quite wide awake either. For that reason I'd give the whole experience an A-. In any case I'd certainly go back.
