There's a new (or new to LA) chain of Japanese-style convenience stores called Famima!! (exclamation marks included). There's a branch on the Third Street Promenade and another on Westwood Blvd, etc, and I have to say that they are making me unhappy. They carry a large number of quasi-bento prepared meals, which I'll admit look like they're probably edible. The problem is that you don't see any customers buying them. From the sound of the chain's weirdly-pretentious-in-Japanese-corporate-sort-of-way Web site, it sounds as though this chain has a significant amount of money behind it, which in my estimation means that they are going to waste a lot of food before they finally go broke. Has anybody actually eaten anything from these places? I've gone so far as to get one of their unusual brands of soda (sorry, forget which one), and it was actually good, considering that it was soda. But the food, no.
