Just noticed a bright shiny new sign that says, Cha-Ya vegetarian Japanese Cuisine (actually not sure about the cuisine part, but I am about the rest) on Valencia between 18th and 19th right next to the New College in the spot that has been the boarded up as far as I can remember Chinese restaurant, whose name I can't actually remember.
No work's been done, just the big shiny sign. I'm thinking this has to be the same Cha-Ya in Berkeley. I called them to ask and first they said, "maybe next week." and then they said "I don't know". I couldn't tell if the person on the phone didn't want to talk about it or didn't understand my question. Anyone know what's up?
Was this in the Chronicle or on Chowhound and I missed it? At any rate, it will be a nice addition to the neighborhood--and pretty direct competition with Minako.
