I have long bemoaned the wasteland of commercial cookies worth eating, but I can at last stop my moaning! I discovered this shortbread line while making our annual foliage time visit to Burlington VT. last month. Every year, I check out the aisles of Healthy Living ( something like Whole Foods) because they have proven to be THE place to find the best local artisinal food producers. They also have the largest variety of Douglas Sweets products. DS is a pretty young company and the owner, Debra, is right now on track to move into a commercial facility where she can begin to fill the growing demand for her cookies. Once she gets established there, I fully expect to see DS sold in the finest food shops everywhere. In the meantime, she does have a well-designed web site which does retail mailorder . Of the many flavors that DS makes, I am particularly fond of the Fennel Anise, Chocolate- dipped Maple Walnut, Lemon White Chocolate, and Espresso, and the Wee Bites are a wonderful size.
They are tender and have a delightful sandy texture (that's the rice flour) and most all of them taste like they're supposed to, with authentic flavorings that don't taste fake. They are sturdy and don't get all crumbly in their packages. Their shelf life is at least double what their packaging says, and most of them come in sturdy zip- lock 'green' packaging made of rice paper. Brilliant !
