C&H Cafeteria (Durham, NC)

Sometimes I like getting cafeteria food at K&W in Chapel Hill because it's inexpensive and a balanced meal. I realize that most of the entrees are loaded with saturated fat and artery-clogging ingredients, but ordering a baked fish or roast beef with sides of turnips and green beans provides a healthy meal for less money than a footlong sub.

I noticed that a new cafeteria opened up adjacent to the Northgate Mall (where the old Harris Teeter used to be), and has a high sanitation score of 98.0, so it seemed promising. I went there for lunch today to see how it chalks up to K&W and my favorite, K&S Cafeteria in Cary (now that place seems to use better ingredients, healthier recipes, and more variety of veggies, like rutabagas and casseroles).

Unfortunately, C&H doesn't seem to stack up. My roast beef looked to be of pretty high quality, but it was chewy and smelled like the dog food Alpo. That's never a good sign. The collard greens were fine, and a welcome change from the turnip greens usually taking its place at most cafeterias. The green beans were your average cafeteria green beans, but the "creamed corn" was more like kernels of undercooked corn floating in a thin yellow broth. Not very tasty.

All in all, considering that C&H and K&W are equal distances from my locale, I see no reason to go to the former. K&W's food at the very least is more tasty and about 25 cents cheaper. In my opinion, K&S still remains the star of the local cafeteria scene by a long shot.

Aside: What is it with all these cafeterias being named "letter&letter." Who started that trend? Why is it even a trend? Can't they be more creative? One would think that customers are smart enough to recognize a cafeteria if it's not named "letter&letter." Right? It worked for Morrison's and Piccadilly back in the day...
