My two cents on Sprinkles cupcakes

The quality of Sprinkles cupcakes have been somewhat hotly contested on this board, and curious, I tried a few for the first time this weekend to satisfy a fierce chocolate cupcake craving.

We tried the coconut, red velvet and double chocolate. My boyfriend pronounced the coconut quite spectacular - strong coconut flavor with no added sweetness to compensate for lack of real flavor. I have to admit, although I'm not a big fan of coconut, it was pretty good.

I went with the red velvet which was not that impressive and actually quite dry and without a strong flavor of any kind. Is red velvet supposed to taste like that? I feel like southerners should know better. My boyfriend said it tasted like a dog biscuit.

Later, at home, the double chocolate did not disappoint. It was quite fantastic and had a rich, moist chocolate flavor. I'm a fan.

My final thought on Sprinkles is definitely "pretty good" as the number of flavors are really impressive and I was quite pleased with the chocolate and coconut. It seems a bit "hit or miss", depending on what you get. It was good enough that I'm looking forward to tasting some more of their flavors - lime coconut, strawberry and black & white for starters - but not so great that I don't feel like a fool for paying $3.25 for a cupcake. I do acknowledge that just comes with the territory/neighborhood.

Next stop: Leda's Bake Shop. I heard that's quite fantastic as well.
