Cecconi's, Mayfair, London

Paid two visits to Cecconi's last week, once for dinner and once for breakfast. Both were superb.

Dinner was simple - lobster spaghetti, which came with lots of fresh basil and cherry tomatoes. Half a delicious lobster piled on top, its flavour saturating the perfectly al dente noodles.

For breakfast, we ordered a passionfruit smoothie and a raspberry smoothie, coffee and hot chocolate, truffled scrambled eggs and a bacon sandwich. They also brought us complimentary freshly squeezed orange juice and grapefruit juice. Everything was excellent. The juices were very recently squeezed (as opposed to having that taste that develops when the fruit has been squeezed and the juice left to sit around for several hours), the smoothies were respectively mellow (the raspberry) and bracingly tangy (the passionfruit). I wonder whether there was gelatin or something similar in them - the bubbliness was oddly stable. Surprised by how extensive the smoothie and juice menu was, with about eight types of each. The pear juice and the watermelon juice were both especially tempting - and more so as the menu notes that all juices are squeezed in the restaurant itself - but trying them will have to wait for another visit. It's remarkable and particularly nice to see these offerings as I've noticed that finding great fruit in London can be a challenge. The highlight of breakfast was the scrambled eggs - loads of truffle flavour and very moist. Bacon sandwich was good - simple and straightforward. The hot chocolate arrived with the melted chocolate in a separate pitcher from the hot milk, which was a lovely surprise as it wasn't noted on the menu and restaurants usually trumpet it when they're going to produce hot chocolate which is that lavish. It's great that Cecconi's puts in those quality touches as a matter of course.

The restaurant was pleasantly tranquil when we arrived for breakfast but buzzing by the time we left (the brunch service had started). The room was absolutely jammed during dinner, which must be nice for them in this economy. Service at reception and from the waitstaff during both meals was warm, efficient and accommodating.
