Catalan Farms Organic Salsas and Relishes at Alisal Certified Farmers Market (Salinas)

Melanie Wong | Aug 9, 201311:37 PM

The seasonal Alisal Certified Farmers Market is my favorite in Salinas. The vendor that I buy the most from each Tuesday, Catalan Farms, recently started selling fresh salsas and relishes made from its own excellent organic produce by a family member.

They’re available for tasting at the market stand, served up with corn tortilla chips. So far, I especially like the roasted tomato salsa roja, made with very sweet and ripe Romas, garlic, jalapeño chiles, cilantro, onion, and sea salt. The tomatillo salsa verde fashioned from roasted milperos, jalapeño chiles, garlic and sea salt is also very fine. Neither is watery; a spoon is needed to serve up these densely packed, coarsely chopped salsas. On the first day, the spice level is a notch below medium-hot, but the spiciness builds over the next few days to become quite hot. I’ve also enjoyed the nopales (cactus) salsa, combined with red chiles and pickled onions, and the plainer elote (sweet corn), more like a vegetable side dish. Pickled nopales and canned jalapeños are also available. They’re priced at $3 per pint or two pints for $5.
