I write for advice about an anniversary party. My immediate family lives in Boston, and in late June, we'll all be in Chicago, where my mother’s extended family lives, for my folks’ 40th anniversary. We’d like to have a party for the greater family plus a few select friends. We are trying to find a restaurant with a casual atmosphere and great food that would either have a private room or would be small enough to take over for the evening. We are talking about a crowd of 30 max -- probably fewer.
The model would be the party we gave for my grandfather’s 95th birthday in Kansas City a few years back. One of the best barbecue places in town (Fiorella’s Jack Stack) had a private room. The food wasn't fancy but it was terrific. If we were in Boston, we would go to Woodman's for fried clams and lobster rolls. If there is not an indigenous Chicago choice (Steak is not our thing and hot dogs are a bit too downscale), ethnic would also work.
We’re spread out across the North Side and North Shore from Wicker Park to Wilmette. The place should be accessible for my grandfather, who uses a walker or wheelchair.
