cast-iron chicken

Just made a simple chicken recipe for the first time that I got from this board. It called for heating Indian spices in oil, adding the chicken thighs, and simmering them in lemon juice. I used a cast-iron pot and the chicken turned an unappetizing looking blackish color so I have two questions: did the iron/lemon juice cause the odd color? and is it ok to eat? TIA
