I took a trip to Cascon Cheesecake on 149th Street and 7th Avenue in Whitestone in search of a pumpkin pie. I had just visited Stork's but had no luck.
I was surprised to see the total transformation the former industrial looking bakery had undergone. Cascon is now part bakery, part cafe, with an extended menu that includes their awesome cheesecake.
The owners were extremely friendly...which almost shocked me in contrast from Stork's, which used to be customer friendly but now has a lot of grumpy and/or younger & indifferent employees. They did not have pumpkin pie...but the owner told me to come back in an hour and he'd have one baked for me. And so he did. And when it turned out I had to wait an extra 15 minutes after I returned (it had to cool), he offered me a free piece of cake and coffee while I waited.
Restaurants and stores in general don't care about their customers anymore...which is silly, b/c a simple gesture like Cascon made to me on Monday is going to keep me coming back.
Stork's remains a damn good bakery, and their jelly donuts are the best I have ever had. But Cascon now has a special place in my heart.
Btw...it was a damn good pumpkin pie.
