In a Mexican restaurant world full of neon flash and pretentious, inconsistent, overpriced, over hyped Americanized chains, Casa Grande stands out as the antithesis of those meal factories.
Guacamole prepared table-side seems a common occurrence, as people are demanding a bit more than a cheese topped, mass prepared semblance of what Americans define as Mexican cuisine..This is a cool trend though, as I love fresh guacamole, and here it was the freshest and best I've had, and was prepared masterfully by our friendly server.
The Plato Ranchero I ordered consisted of thin but hearty portions of marinated steak, and chicken and a pork chop that still chases the sheep from the fences as I count down to slumber..SO DELICIOUS!
Sides are usually blah no matter how good the mains taste, but the sides were as outstanding as the meat set before it. I'm not kidding, every bite of the re-fried beans, the Spanish rice, which included green beans, Lima beans and corn, was more delicious than the previous.
My dining companion ordered one Beef Enchilada and one Chicken Tamale. the enchilada was tender, perfectly seasoned and rich, and the tamale, unlike most experienced today which are dense with masa and light with filling, where just the opposite, being light and tender, while not losing any of the traditional flavor our texture of the traditional tamale. Both dishes were covered in an elegant, earthy, deep Red Chile sauce.
An outstanding Bahama Mama was delivered from the bar.
The topper of the evening was the alfresco dining available, and taken advantage of on this beautiful night, with the friendliest most attentive staff in wait.
This is not white tablecloth, severely authentic Mexican cuisine served in the most peaceful setting in Richmond, but it's clean, welcoming, colorful, and the cuisine, in its niche, is excellent!
