carmelizing onions in the oven are getting dry-- help!

I'm trying the oven-carmelizing method hailed on these boards, I have about 4lbs of onions thinly sliced and tossed with salt and evoo, on my largest shallow roasting pan (it was a cake pan once) piled about an inch deep, going in the oven at 300, tossing every 30 minutes. The tips of the onions are getting all dried out and brownish on the top- almost burnt but not quite. Should I be worried?
