Carbon steel and chemical smell when seasoning for first time

Just received two new De Buyer Carbone Plus pans and went to work to get them seasoned. I scrubbed them with a nylon scrubby and soap, coated them with grapeseed oil and put them in a very hot oven. When I opened the oven they had turned the expected bronze colour, but there was a definite chemical smell and short burst of smoke from the oven...so I assume I didn't get all of the factory coating off the pans before seasoning them.

I cooled the pans, scrubbed them as best I could with a brillo pad, but I wouldn't say I got a whole lot of the new seasoning off. (Just....such hard work!) Deciding to double down on the process I repeated the grapeseed oil/oven process. Less of a chemical smell the second time around, no burst of smoke, but still some chemical smell.

Do I need to completely strip the pans? Or is there any hope that the bad stuff will simply burn off?
