Captiva update-LONG

Boston-based 'hound and I just returned from Captiva where we stayed at the South Seas Resort. Was traveling with another couple and 3 small children so eating out was fairly limited.

Capt'n Als-South Seas Resort: ate here our first night out of desperation. Kids were cranky and it appeared family friendly. Food was mediocre at best but we ate outside, had some good drinks and our waiter, once he got his act together, was efficient. Adults had grilled grouper sandwiches and grouper club sandwiches. Passable but what do expect with a fish sandwich?? Also, excellent crab and corn bisque. Kids had chicken fingers and fries that could have come out of any ones freezer. Fun kid drinks in cool glasses though!

Bubble Room: Lunchtime on a beach day. HORRIBLE for toddlers and the food was again just OK. Maybe this would be better for the 8-10 yo set but 2 almost 3 year olds and a 5 year old didn't get the decorations, there were only 2 kid food options and the general atmosphere was look-don't-touch and kids really did not seem welcome at all. Our server seemed annoyed that the kids wanted to walk around and check out the tunnel of love and Xmas displays. Also- adults are charged $7.50 per adult if they don't order any food. I guess when you know your food is so bad that adults don't want to order for themselves (just feed the kids, check out scene and get a better meal elsewhere) they have to make up the revenue somehow but it just seemed to add to the whole non-family friendly vibe.

Mucky Duck: drinks after the beach around 4:30/5:00. We were going to stay for dinner but the menu stated clearly "kids MUST remain seated or they will be sold" When we made mention of it, jokingly, the waitress told us they were serious. Either the kids remain seated or you have to leave. Well that left us out. And there are no meals on the patio, just apps. We don't let our kids run around and they are well behaved with good manners but that kind of attitude leads us to believe that the owners and other diners would not appreciate us staying.

Kings Crown-South Seas resort: Our one dinner with out the kids!! Nice window table with a view unfortunately a large group was having a reunion on the lawn with food, bar, band so kind of lost the view but what can you do?? Started with Cosmo’s all around. Excellent glasses of wine the apps then a bottle of Phelps Insignia with dinner. For apps we had a shrimp/asparagus "napoleon", 2 duck confits with foi gras, and she-crab soup. All were excellent. Dinner was steaks, 2 Cuban inspired groupers and a wild salmon. No complaints with anything. The grouper was the best of the lots with black beans, mango salsa and rice. Dessert was key lime cheesecake and bananas flambé that literally took them over 40 minutes to make, it was hysterical. Our waiter, a very nice guy who seemed very tentative, obviously didn't know what he was doing and to boot was trying to make 2 tables worth at the same time. But we didn't care as we had eaten great food, had drank great wine and the kids were in a very capable babysitters hands!

South Seas Beach Bar: hotdogs for the kids a few days here. The kids loved it, right on the beach. Wonderful sunsets, and the bartenders have a VERY heavy hand with the floaters on the adult drinks!!
