best cappuccino

The best cup of cappuccino is at Casa Cupcake at 545 Ninth Avenue, at 40th Street. The ambiance is wonderful--relaxed and quiet with beautiful details that have been chosen and placed with real care. There is a predilection for the old-time in evidence, with an aged and decorative espresso machine, an old wooden refrigerator, an antique cash register. You can't get more old New York than the view. Situated behind the Port Authority Building, you look out on vintage New York City industrial scenery. The cup begins with the coffee grinder that grinds the whole beans right into the basket. The house distills a short cup, very dense and rich, with no bitterness. On top of that goes the steamed milk, which has a thick creamy texture. The staff knows how to add this to the espresso, in several additions, swirled gently. If you choose, you can top this with nutmeg which you grate with the provided nutmeg grater.--Connie Crothers
