Sam Sifton's A Field Guide to the American Sandwich (http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/20... ) has prompted a certain amount of attention on Chowhound and elsewhere. I was eating an excellent sandwich as I began to read it, the brisket sliders at the Bull and Barrel, on Wade Rd. in Latham. Sliced brisket, gouda cheese, onion straws on brioche slider buns. So why don't we crowd-source a guide to sandwiches available in the counties that make up the Capital District, Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Saratoga, maybe working out to Columbia, Washington, Montgomery... If people would contribute, I'll try to compile a master list, and keep it up to date. I don't think it has to be a Best of, just a list of great sandwiches in various categories. I think we should follow the Times's lead and omit burgers and hot dogs, which deserve their own threads.
I'll start with what I think are our two most noteworthy sandwiches, the mixed Italian sub and the fish fry.
Mixed Italian Subs
I'm partial to the mixed Italian subs at Genoa (Rt 9 in Loudonville) and Roma's two locations (Cobbee Rd., Latham and Washington Ave., Saratoga Springs). Pellegrino's (Central Ave. in Albany, Rt. 9 in Malta) aren't far behind. Others?
The fish fry must be the Capital Region's most characteristic sandwich, maybe along with the Michigan hot dog. It should be haddock fried to order, on an ordinary hot dog bun. I prefer tartar, but the folks in front of me in line usually order cocktail sauce. Root beer is the correct accompaniment. The fish fry I eat most often is Ted's, on Rt. 9 in Latham (there are a half-dozen locations; the original is still in business on 3rd Ave in Watervliet. Ted's has plenty of competitors, and as this is a sandwich that has to be eaten as soon as the fish comes out of the fryer, the best fish fry is probably the one closest to where you are. Which ones do you like best?
Those are the two standout sandwiches of the Capital District, but there are plenty of other excellent choices:
Pastrami sandwich at Parkside Eatery, Phila St., Saratoga Springs: House-smoked pastrami on Rock Hill Bread. Good brisket and beef tongue sandwiches here too.
Roast beef panini at Via Fresca Gourmet Market, Western Ave. in Guilderland. Roast beef, red onions, cheddar, Russian. My favorite so far, although I haven't worked my way down the list of twenty or so combinations of ingredients.
Corned beef and chopped liver on rye, dark mustard, Gershon's Deli, Union Ave., Schenectady. You have to ask for this particular combination, and should.
I'll think of more later, but I've made myself hungry and I'm going to start dinner. Please contribute your favorite sandwiches, Capital District only, and we'll get a master list together.
