Canteen for dinner

My husband and I went to Canteen for dinner this past weekend. We frequent it often for Sunday brunch, but decided it was time to try dinner there.

Our reservation was for 6pm, and everyone was seated promptly at 6pm. This is where we ran into a glitch - the waitress told us to take counter seats, whereas we reserved a booth. We made the reservation on a Sunday about 3 weeks ago and took this day and time due to the availability of a booth. We don't mind counterseats at brunch, but wanted a table for dinner. We both saw him write our name on a line for a booth. In addition, there was only one other reservation at the time. Well, this waitress showed me the list, and she said our name was in her writing - she had erased our reservation and put us at the counter, although she did not admit this. That was my problem - she never admitted her mistake. In the end, it did work out - another party was a little late and she seated them at the counter, even though she said they confirmed a booth (um, she didn't tell me when she confirmed the day before that we were at the counter). It was great that we got the table, but she should have given it to us in the first place since she was wrong.

Besides that, the food was great! We both liked that it was organized - take your entire order at once, etc. We each had a glass of rose champagne to start, and then ordered a 1/2 bottle of Olivier Guyot Pinot Noir. I do like that they have the 1/2 bottles. The brioche rolls are buttery and delightful. My menu was a gratin of crab, fennel and onion to start, the lamb scallopini with a white bean puree and pomegranate sauce, and the vanilla souffle. My husband got the #1 tuna with cucumber and some sauce that I forget to start, mushrooms en papillote for an entree, and the pear tarte tatin with gouda cheese on top for dessert. I do agree that the souffle was a tad runny at the bottom, but it was absolutely delicious! My husband and I split everything and I don't have one bad thing to say about the food. I thought it was all prepared and executed wonderfully, and the portions were a perfect size.

I thought the service was fine, although she brought the check right at dessert and didn't offer coffee. We saw others with coffee and then asked for it (we also overheard another couple complaining amongst themselves that they weren't offered coffee). I think they didn't offer b/c they were trying to get everyone out for the next seating (the lobby was very crowded).

Overall, I would return for dinner. I definitely recommend their 1st seating, and definitely recommend confirming your seating choice!
