I have found very good cannolis in Bethesda.
Wife and I happened to stop by Cornucopia in Bethesda this afternoon--the new shop mentioned a few days ago on this board. The friendly owner asked if this was our first visit. It was, so he gave us a brief description of the store and his plans for it.
We ordered a pair of cannoli and sat at one of the tables. The owner filled the cannolis as we waited, and improvised some hot cocoa for us (which was not on the menu). The ricotta filling was excellent, among the best I have had (much better than, say, Ferrara's in NY, and almost as good as my all time favorite, which is from Modern Pastry in Boston's North End.) He makes the filling himself. The shells he has brought in from Baltimore.
As the owner described his ambitions for the modest shop, which include offering literally hundreds of cheeses (he only has a dozen or so now), and as his assistant helped another customer, Wife and I looked at the two of them and were reminded of the wonderful movie _Big Night_, the protagonists of which display an endearing mix of enthusiasm and frustration.
I hope they have good luck. I know I'll be back for the cannolis.
