The Cannery on Labor Day

Movie or shopping mall? The choices were limited in our thinking but we found ourselves fighting the crowds at South Coast Plaza where someone recommended Blue Water Grill. Of course, we decided to go to the location on Balboa Island and not the one right across the street. On the way, we saw The Cannery and had been curious about it as well. Great theme restaurant decor with multiple rooms on two levels. There was a half bottle of a nice Stephen Ross chardonnay for $22. Excellent sourdough bread served warm was immediately brought to the table. Delicious lobster bisque for $7.50. My friend's seafood salad had a nice selection of shrimp, scallops, crab and a small piece of lobster for $18.95. The innocuos citrus vinaigrette that came with it gave way to a more satisfying thousand island (aka louie) dressing upon request. A smaller salad of greens, sliced apple, pecans and Stilton cheese was okay, arriving first without the Stilton and in that same uninteresting dressing for $7.50. Service was holiday erratic but everyone was on message with promoting both Monday industry night (10% off when you show a check stub from a restaurant or restaurant related job) and Tuesday wine night, when they present a separate electic list that they charge only $1 above their cost.
